According to tradition, the temple was founded in 746 CE by the monk Eki by imperial decree of Emperor Shomu. Legend has it that Hino Kanemaru, who contributed to the construction of the Great Buddha, established the temple to enshrine a bowl of sacred origin from the Buddha. It was destroyed by fire in 1590 but was rebuilt during the Edo period. The current structures were built between the Genbun and Ho Rei eras.
