It is said to have been founded by En no Gyobu, a legendary mountain ascetic active in the 7th century. The current Zao-do was rebuilt in 1590 CE (Tensho 18) through the donation of Toyotomi Hideyoshi. The principal standing statue of Zao Gongen was crafted by the Nanto Buddhist sculptors Sojō and Sōin, who were brothers.
