Founded in 1362 CE (Jōji 1) by the priest Hoin Eison. It was established as the family temple for the Ito clan, who were vassals of the Hojo clan of the Kamakura Shogunate. The temple was created to mourn the spirits of the Ito clan members who fled to this area when the Hojo clan fell. The original principal image was Yakushi Ruri-kou Nyorai (Medicine Buddha of Lapis Lazuli Light), which is why the temple's mountain name is Ruri-kouzan (Lapis Lazuli Light Mountain).
