Zendoji
館林市楠町3692
A Jodo-shu (Pure Land) temple located in Kanayama City, Gunma Prefecture, officially named Shonan-zan Mison-in Zendoji. The temple grounds contain the graves of historical figures, including that of Sakakibara Yasumasa, one of the Tokugawa Four Heavenly Kings.
History
It is said to have been founded in 708 CE (Wado 1) by the monk Kibi no Makibi. In 1590, Sakakibara Yasumasa, who became the lord of Kanayama Castle, established various halls as his family temple. In 1615, it was designated as one of the Eighteen Danrin (Buddhist monasteries) of the Kanto region by Tokugawa Ieyasu. In 1990, it was relocated to its current site due to the Kanayama Station Front Plaza Development Project.

What visitors say
The temple grounds, welcomed by a grand mountain gate, are beautifully maintained, offering a healing space with a garden in front of the main hall and subsidiary shrines. The cherry blossoms and azaleas are particularly spectacular in season, and the bell, which rings three times a day, is a distinctive feature. Goshuin (temple calligraphic seal stamps) are provided in printed form, and a walking path is available in the surrounding area.
