It was founded in 1637 CE (Kan'ei 14) as the Koka-in memorial temple when the Zuifuden Mausoleum was constructed by Date Muneshige, the second daimyo of Sendai Domain. During the Meiji Restoration, the temple and its sub-temples were destroyed due to the Haibutsu Kishaku (destruction of Buddhism) and the abolition of the domains. It was restored in 1926. Currently, it is outside the jurisdiction of the Zuifuden Foundation.
