History
In 1316 CE (Kōan 3), during the Nanboku-chō period, the Rinzai Zen monk Musō Soseki founded Chōzenji in a corner of Seikō-ji and converted it to the Rinzai sect. The temple received the patronage of Lady Oi, the mother of Takeda Shingen. When Shingen divided the temple and relocated part of it to Kōfu, the remaining portion came to be known as Kuchō Zenji. Within the temple grounds, medieval stone structures, including Lady Oi's Hōkyō-in-tō (pagoda for sutra storage), still remain.
