Katori Jingu (Katori Grand Shrine)

Overview

The enshrined deity is Futsunushi no Okami. As the head shrine of approximately 400 Katori shrines nationwide, it forms the 'Tokoku Sansha' (Three Shrines of the Eastern Province) along with Kashima Jingu and Ikihiki Jinja. Legend says that while the Kaname-ishi (keystone) of Kashima Jingu holds down the head of a giant catfish causing earthquakes, the Kaname-ishi of Katori Jingu holds down its tail. The sacred grounds feature a main hall (honden) coated in black lacquer, cedar trees estimated to be a thousand years old, and the Okumiya (inner shrine).
