Kotohira-gu (Kotohira-san)
ことひらぐう
Known affectionately as "Kotohira-san," this shrine is nestled on the slopes of Zoto-san. It serves as the guardian deity of the sea, situated at the end of 785 stone steps.
Overview
The enshrined deities (kami) are Omotenushi-no-Kami and Emperor Sutoku. Situated on the mid-slopes of Zoto-san, the shrine has been worshipped since ancient times as a deity of the sea, agriculture, industrial production, and medicine. During the Edo period, it was a sacred site for commoners, rivaling the pilgrimage to Ise. From the entrance of the approach path to the Honmiku (main shrine), there are 785 stone steps, and a total of 1,368 steps lead to the Okusha (Genkon Shrine). The site is rich in cultural assets, including the Asahi-sha (a designated Important Cultural Property) and wall paintings by Maruyama Okyo.
