The head shrine of the Miyoshi shrines nationwide, enshrining the 'God of Power,' Miyoshi Reishin.
Overview
The enshrined deities (kami) are the three: Ōmikimi no Ōkami, Sukuyahiko no Ōkami, and Miyoshi Reishin. It is said that Miyoshi Reishin is the deified form of Fujiwara no Miyoshi, the lord of Taihei Castle, and is revered as the 'god who presides over strength, competition, and the subduing of evil to reveal righteousness.' According to shrine tradition, the site was founded in 673 CE (Hakuho 2) by En no Gyōja, and the shrine buildings were erected in 801 CE (Enryaku 20) by Sakanoue no Tamuramaro. From the medieval period onward, it developed as a sacred site for Shugendo (ascetic mountain worship). The 'Miyoshi Bonten-sai' held on January 17th is known as a unique and colorful festival that brightens the winter in Akita.
